Feeling Crabby with the Full Moon in Cancer
At 6:48 pm EST on January 17, 2022, we enter the peak of the first full moon of 2022 - the full moon in Cancer. It is during full moons that we are confronted by that which does not serve us, and we are given an opportunity to release it into the ethers, to be replaced by something brighter and better. For most of us, Full Moons are a time of heightened emotionality and the Cancer Full Moon definitely takes this up a notch or two.
Cancer is a water sign - a very emotional sign - and it is symbolized by the crab. So for this Full Moon in Cancer, I want to share with you my favorite crab analogy.
When we think of a crab, we think of movement. As the crab grows, it must move from one shell to another. Its old home and protection from the elements no longer fits, and therefore it must search for a new one. When the crab is looking for its new shell, it is without one at all, leaving it completely vulnerable. So while the growth makes it stronger, it has to go shell-less while it searches for a new home that fits.
To me, this is such a beautiful representation of what this Full Moon is about. Because in order for us to step into the version of ourselves that we know is absolutely possible - the version of ourselves that we can almost taste - we're going to have to step outside the version that we are in right now. And there will be a time in between that feels incredibly uncomfortable - almost as if we have lost our home forever.
Especially after the energy of the new moon in Capricorn, which had us committing to the greatest vision of our lives that we know is possible, we find what we must let go of.
Like I said: this Moon takes it up a notch…
And so we have to make space for our new version, which means we need to sit with the gray area until we arrive there. Because whenever we’re living a life that is intentional and constantly evolving, we are always going to have moments in the gray: the moments where you don't have the new version of you just yet, but you’re on your way. So although it can be very uncomfortable, it’s also where so much of the transformation happens.
One of the things that you are going to have a deeper awareness of during this Full Moon is your emotions. How many times have we blamed our angst on the moon? But as I say so often, those feelings already exist inside of you, it’s not actually the moon that's making it happen. What the moon does is amplify all of those feelings. There's beauty in that because with the discomfort comes the ability to shift the things that create the discomfort. Otherwise, they would lay dormant just under the surface, bubbling but never quite being dealt with.
While the Full Moon is in Cancer, we are still working with its opposing energy with the sun in Capricorn. You might find yourself more focused on earthly possessions or accomplishments than usual (Capricorn). And you also might feel like you are feeling all of your emotions so intensely all at once that you're not even able to work with them (Cancer). And sometimes it’s so overwhelming you don’t want to feel them at all, so you scroll or watch TV or gossip, or basically anything that keeps you from actually being with yourself.
But in order to actually work with these energies, we have to sit with them. Actively. Sit with them to get curious and allow the discomfort to come up. Something I like to do is interview my discomfort and have a conversation with it. And when you’re quiet enough, still enough and brave enough to dialogue with it, the earthly action you need to take to move that energy will make itself known to you.
