Social Media Mind F*ck

I was reading a study the other day that said that because of social media, we’ve become so disconnected with ourselves that we no longer know what we like or want.

Because of the constant external stimuli, and seeing everyone’s perfectly curated lives on social media, we are always trying to keep up with all that we see.

And in that, our own preferences and desires get lost in a sea of projections.

It goes so deep that we buy things and travel to places just to post pictures for others to validate our success.

That really struck me, and I started taking inventory of my life and asking myself:

“Would I still want this if social media didn’t tell me it was want-able?”

I’ve made no secret of how problematic I feel social media is and how personally unaligned I have become with it.

But even so, I uncovered some things I was being unconsciously drawn to by its enormous hypnotic pull.

And again, it is that self awareness that I often reference, that helps you break the loop.

Once I get curious with my own desires, the need to measure up releases and I can feel at peace.

Of course, I am a human in 2023, so I still do open up social and indulge in a little scroll.

And when I do, I can still feel the pull to judge myself through comparison.

But then I remember the peace of returning to myself and recognize that I don’t need to “keep up” to be good enough.
