New Moon in Cancer: Moon Report

When Will and I were pregnant, we would often go to the beach for walks. On one of those beach walks, we stumbled upon a crab and watched it scurry down the beach.

Will told me about how crabs don’t keep the same shell their entire lives - as they grow, they change them out for new ones. Which means that there is a moment in time when the crab has no shell.

I’ve always loved that as an analogy for what we experience during the Cancer New Moon, and I tell some variation of that story every year around this time.

Because Cancer is symbolized by the crab, and it is a deeply emotional sign that is always connected to our feelings of home and stability.

Home is often our place of retreat. It is where we go when we want to feel safe and comfortable (like how your own bed feels sooo good after being away from it). Home feels good and nourishing and cozy and safe. It’s usually the place we most want to be.

But when we take that analogy and use it to look at our inner landscape, it can show us the places we have become stagnant because we are scared to leave what we have outgrown because it feels comfortable. But deep down we know it’s not actually comfortable - it’s just familiar.

The problem is that the subconscious mind cannot distinguish between familiarity and comfort. So growth is something we have to consciously be aware of, and consciously choose.

Almost everyone has a story about going back to a toxic relationship, or staying in a soul sucking job, or keeping that friend who makes you feel so bad to be around.

There is always a place for us to reflect on where we choose the familiar because the uncertainty of growth is so scary.

And the New Moon in Cancer brings that into sharp focus for us, and asks us to tune into our intuition to understand what new frame of thought/way to live/type of alignment is demanding that we step into the unknown and grow.

During this New Moon, you might have uncomfortable moments, but that’s just because you are in between two versions of yourself: the you that holds onto things that make you small, and the you that is ready to be big and bold and live fully and unapologetically.

There’s always the choice to stay where you are, and stay in the familiar. You don’t have to grow.

But you should. Because life gets so much better when you do.
