How To Stay Motivated (Fun Exercise Inside)
I have a question for you:
How do you stay motivated for whatever it is you want to create WHILE still being present and enjoying life?
This is particularly important to ask as we have entered holiday season and we find ourselves slipping into old patterns of self-abandonment and busyness.
I’d like to offer you an exercise to help you stay committed to feeling better and doing small things during the holiday season.
First, ask yourself what is stopping you from doing what needs to be done.
Usually, we know what we need to do…so why don’t we just do it?
Resistance is no joke, but please remember that disrupting that resistance is one of the most powerful things you can do to catapult yourself forward into the life of your dreams.
Now ask yourself how do you motivate yourself to move forward?
One of the most common ways we do this is through using a negative motivator - something that is usually based in fear.
“I need to do X so Y doesn’t happen.”
And while that can work, it’s not one that will feel good in your body.
And the truth is: it’s very difficult to sustain action when it’s driven by fear.
So now let’s look at positive motivation.
Positive motivation works better because you’re doing something you’re connected to and you know you are creating something by doing it.
“I will feel so good when I complete x” and we can tap into the feeling of x to give us extra energy to start the task, instead of the feeling the dread.
When we are clear that the journey itself is the destination, we can bring our focus and attention to creating a positive journey that feels good.
Then there are times we don’t do what we need to do because we are overwhelmed.
Overwhelm happens when we focus on the big picture instead of the tiny little vignettes that make up the big picture.
So remember: everything is made up of small tiny things.
Here’s my assignment for you:
Spend some time getting super intentional and deliberate with the rest of this month, so you can set yourself up for a beautiful foundation to go into the next year with.
Map out your month.
Viscerally go into how it will feel to get that thing done.
(Remember that we experience life through feeling, vision, and hearing. So when we want to create excitement about the task…think about pulling up these different states.)
Now:
Come up with 5 specific words of how you want to feel.
For example: Confident, Grateful, Empowered, Strong, Safe
And then journal about it, dropping yourself into the visceral experience, which will then lead you into an embodied state, which will then lead you into the real experience.
Take some time with this exercise, and then drop me a note to let me know how it went, and what you experienced!!
